About

SeaSea was founded in 2018. Our goal was to utilise more of the crab.
It all began with an idea. Jan Roar Storesund spent decades in the crab-processing industry, engineering better ways to extract the meat of crabs. In his work, the one request he got continually was to put more meat inside the crab in the first place, instead of trying to get what little meat was inside to come out.

While Norwegian brown crab (Cancer Pagurus) is a highly demanded seafood, supply is limited due to a lack of high meat content. Autumn is the period with the best crab quality, but even then, only 10% of crabs are qualified for sale as whole crab.

All in all, this meant that crab resource utilisation was very low, and at SeaSea we wanted to change that. After years of research, development, trials, and improvements, we finally arrived at a solution we were satisfied with, a land-based feeding facility with patented technology ensuring that all Norwegian Coastal Crabs delivered by SeaSea are full of meat.

Today, we receive crabs at our facilities in Sveio and Åkra on Norway’s western coast, from local fishermen who catch the crabs using traditional pots. These crabs arrive with varying amounts of meat, but after 30 days in our feeding facility, all crabs are full of meat and ready for the market. This allows us to deliver full premium Norwegian Coastal Crabs every day, all year round.

F.A.Q.

Is this farmed crab?
No. We catch crabs in the traditional way, using pots, and then feed them for 30 days.
Is this sustainable?
Yes. Crabs are practically omnivorous, which means we can, for example, use trimmings from the fishing industry – food that would otherwise be discarded. If you’re interested in more information about our environmental impact, you can download our sustainability report here.

Our story

New Processing Facility completed
September 2023
Processing facillity 1 is up and running with a capacity of 18 tonnes p.a
Grant from innovasjon norge
November 2021
Having proven technological viability with our pilot facility we needed further funding to fully automate our systems at scale. Innovasjon Norge has generously granted us for this purpose.
Construction begins
February 2021
The construction of our first feed facility in Sveio begins. Producing 20 tonnes of crab a year, this facility is where we learn how well our technology scales in production. It is an important step on the way to our dream of fresh high-quality feed farmed seafood in every corner of the world.
The pilot facility is operational
January 2021
Yet another proof of concept milestone was getting the pilot facility operational. Here each crab is housed separately, automatically fed, cleaned, and nurtured. The quality of the crab feed farmed here is unlike any other. This is the version of the feed facility which will be brought to an industrial scale.
Patent granted for first prototype
October 2020
Eighteen months after the initial application, the patent for the first prototype of Decapod’s feed facility is granted. This sets the precedent for the novelty of Jan Roar’s invention and strengthens the foundation of the investment case.
Grant from innovasjon norge
Summer 2020
We are honoured to receive a grant from Innovasjon Norge a program by the Norwegian government to encourage innovation. This grant has been essential for developing our pilot facility.
Grant from forskningsrådet
Fall 2019
To support our efforts to better understand the environmental conditions optimal for crab well being and growth we received a grant from the The Research Council of Norway. In collaboration with Møreforsking, we researched the effects of temperature, feed cycle, feed type, water oxygenation, water pollution, and more.
First prototype is successful
February 2019
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. After only a few months, Jan Roar had already achieved a working prototype proving the conceptual viability of automated feed farming crabs on land. While beginning the patent application process, Jan Roar already started the development of a second more sophisticated prototype.
Nordic premium crab is founded by Jan Roar Storesund
October 2018
It all begins with an idea. Jan Roar spent decades in the crab-processing industry engineering better ways to extract the meat out of crabs. In his work, the one request he got continually was to put more meat inside the crab in the first place, instead of trying to get what little meat was inside to come out.

Feed farming brown crabs is not a completely new idea, it’s something many have tried before with no success. Could it be that they had just not tried hard enough, or smart enough? Could Jan Roar solve the problem no one before had been able to? First, he needed a business-savvy partner. That he found in Egil Melkevik, a tenured c-suite executive. Although they did not know it at the time, together they would come to pioneer a new industry.
